- Abstract
- Nowadays in developed countries, tourism is like a lever of change to form a more advanced society, and can have many effects on different areas such as economy, culture and life-style. It does not seem a far-fetched goal to take advantage of our cultural and artistic background to develop Iran. One of the most prominent capacities of Iran is the musical heritage, which is a profitable resource in the development of cultural tourism worldwide. This paper demonstrates the potentials of Iranian folk music, a subset of cultural heritage, as a cultural appeal, which can attract domestic and international tourists. The main objective of this study is to present a model grounded in the present data to illustrate music tourism in Iran. Tourists can understand the culture and lifestyle of society by passing through various cities and getting to know music of each region; especially due to the fact that Iranian music interacts greatly with Iranian culture in ethnic life. The first sign of musical instruments dated back to around 3500 B.C, belonging to an ancient civilization centered in the far west and southwest of what is now Iran, stretching from lowlands of what is now Khuzestan and Ilam Province. These all show the importance of music in Iranian culture. Methodology of this paper is based on the Grounded Theory, which is a systematic methodology in the social sciences involving the construction of a theory through analysis of existing data. In this method researchers review the collected data which consists of repeated ideas, concepts or elements which become apparent during the research. These ideas are tagged with codes which in turn are grouped together to form concepts, and finally form categories. At the final step, these categories may become the basis for the new theory. The theory is based on the concepts and categories achieved through research, and is constructed through establishing the relation between them, all of which revolve around Core Category. In this research, the Core Category was understood to be “Promoting music as a cultural attraction”. Folkloric music of Iran has the potential to be exclusive. It’s different in every city while it is known to have similarities to other cultures which can only increase its value as a cultural attraction. Folkloric music can attract various types of tourists including music experts who are interested to know new forms of music and customs related to them, or even tourists who are looking forward to new adventures and experiences. Although folkloric music of Iran is of high value, we have some intervening conditions and inhibiting factors such as lack of knowledge about our folkloric music, administrative barriers and infrastructural problems. If we want to promote it, we need some strategies such as appropriate propaganda, events, festivals, music tours and infrastructures including music halls, hotels and suitable transportation system. There is no doubt that promoting tourism and the strategies which lead to it can have positive and also negative consequences on the society. When tourists enter a region they bring handful of money to the city, which can result in job creation in different layers of society and can even make people appreciate their cultural heritage. But the negative consequences come from the fact that tourists as guests may not respect the structures of their hosts which may result in their destruction. Based on the results of this study I can say that with proper and adequate planning and management, we can prevent or minimize the bad effects of music tourism which can be environmental or sociocultural. Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries today, thus within the tourism industry different types of events are getting more and more important. People have become more interested in adventures of all kinds, and can travel further away to participate in them or experience new events. Music can be one of these events and as the final model achieved in this study emphasizes, music tourism can offer various economic and social benefits, and those in charge need to take this potential into account and act on it. Keywords: Folkloric Iranian music, cultural tourism, grounded theory.
