- Abstract
- A good way to start this thesis would be to find an actual relationship between the policy of “Third Way” and its contribution in implementing social security reforms. In this regard, the role of social market economy policies in inventing the third way policies would be investigated. Thus, the origins, characteristics, effects and third way policies would be discussed in detail in order to illustrate its impact on social security reforms. Many economists and sociologists believe that Thatcher and her supporters represented and were shaping fundamental shifts in the British socio-economic policies. They argued that if the left did not wake up to the qualitative uniqueness of Thatcher enterprise, it would become marginalized in the face of a neoliberal hegemony. Thus, the new labour found the ideology of the Third Way as one, which they can resort to. Besides, the social market is an important concept within the social democratic tradition in modern British political thought. The characteristics, explanation of main features, its constituent elements, scope of application, the idea of social market economy and its implication in formulating the ideology of Third Way policies in New Labour would be described in detail. Another main issue which remains is the implication of social security reforms under the New Labour and what the third way meant for these reforms. As it would be discussed the main claim of Third Way was to de-commodify the social security services. In this regard, the performance of the New Labour in adopting these reforms and the fact that whether they were successful in implementing these reforms or not would be explained. In doing so, the reforms of public policies of social security would be the focal point. Also, this thesis investigates if there is a principle called Social Market Economy in Britain which can be differentiated from the conventional market economy. Did the New Labour’s Third Way policies based on a social market economy just a political gesture for gaining power or it was a really different policy which blessed Britain with more public welfare and pubic justice as elements of a social market economy? Finally, according to the findings, the Third Way policy of the New Labour was proved to be in line with the principles of social market economy. To support this conclusion, some implications of practical application of the New Labour Third Way policies have been offered.
