- Abstract
- Abstract The first major step toward European integration took place in 1950. The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) of 1951 became the European Community (EC) in 1967. While the European countries viewed this Community as a favorite place for achieving more cooperative goals, not all European states did join the Community – UK is an outstanding example. The relationship between the UK and the European Community fluctuated during the premiership of various Prime Ministers and, as we will see, the second half of Thatcher's tenure was marked by an enduring controversy over Britain's relationship with the European Community. The present thesis focuses on Thatcherism and tries to figure out the reasons behind actions and decisions of Thatcher's administrations for not adopting the full membership to the European Union (then the European Community). In this regard, notions like nationalism, the special relationship between the UK and the US and that how the UK should have played the role of balance between the US and the EU, are considered as the main factors for the UK’s incomplete joining to the EC. It should be mentioned here that the economic reasons would be just briefly referred to in this thesis, as the focus is more political than economic.
