- Abstract
- Abstract The Tea Party Movement of 2009 was s series of street protests against U.S. government’s economic policies which started during the last years of Bush’s administration in 2008, and it continued during the Obama administration. The TPM was examined from various approaches, but the crucial element in understanding the TPM and its ideology i.e. why these groups of people oppose the government is not properly studied. Considering the fact that government’s intervention in economy during the 2008 financial crisis provided a platform for TPM to oppose the existed policy. The critical question regarding TPM’s ideology would be states as follows: Is there an antagonistic relationship between government’s power in one hand and people’s freedom on the other? The methodology which is used in this study is historical analysis. Based on the findings of this thesis, the answer to this question is positive. Inspired by British dissent culture manifested in Magana Carta, colonial experience of opposing British rule and also the Federalist-Antifederalist dialog during the ratification of the Constitution, the tea partiers believe the government has no role to intervene in the matters of economy, income inequality and in the most recent case; the healthcare issue. Such perception of the TPM led to a better analysis of its core ideology and also to the conclusion that the TPM is not the first movement in this tradition and would not be the last one. Key words: Tea Party Movement, Boston Tea Party, Power vs. liberty, AntiFederalism, Magna Carta
