- Abstract
- Many would contend that Scotland has turned into an important place in the twenty-first century, not only because it has been subject to the devolution project but also because it has always had a distinct sense and perception of itself, encased in the terms ‘Scottishness’ and ‘Scottish national identity’. The aim of this research is to describe the background to the Scottish devolution settlement and to present current debates on nationalism, national identity and political participation that are closely interwoven with it. Through the examination of the said issues, the dissertation hopes to capture the scope of the impact of devolution on the areas of nationalism and national identity, and to present answers to the question whether Scotland has been moving away from the Union with Britain or not.
