- Abstract
- Following the confusions surrounding terminologies and the multiplicity of ideas offered by critics and scholars in providing a general definition of the science of signs, or semiotics, "Faisal Ahmar", an Algerian researcher, started to write a comprehensive and valuable book that included all the theoretical groups. He paid attention to complex and layered issues, putting them together in a book called "Mu'jam al-simya'iyat (Glossary of Semiotics)" and offering them to Semiotics lovers; every section of the book contains a question, which the author tries to answer by adopting different literary theories and the view point of different critics and experts from old and new eras; these eras start with Aristotle and Plato and come to contemporary critics, covering different movements of the West and the Arab world. Semiotics is important in itself, because this subject is defined as the core theme of the new science, and all the matters we deal with every day are connected to signs one way or the other. Faisal Ahmar believes that meaning is the product of a collection of signs; these signs are connected to all things and beings, both intelligent and unintelligent, and it is intelligence that should dissect this surrounding sign network in a complex process and find its meaning. This book consists of 38 chapters, including "Signs of Traditional Semiotics in the West", "Semiotic in the Ancient Arab Legacy", "Saussure's Semiotics, "The Semiotics of Theater", "The Semiotics of Cinema", "Discourse", "Reading and Reception Theory", "Narrative Semiotics", etc. This book is important, because it includes all the issues related to Semiotics in different periods and eras, and at the same time has managed to clarify many moot points surrounding this concept and offer the reader everything that bears a connection to it.
