- Abstract
- Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) method is a high resolution geophysical method that used high frequency electromagnetic waves (10-2000 MHz) for detection of shallow subsurface objects. In pulse GPR system, a short (nanoseconds) of electromagnetic energy is transmitted into the ground then the wave that is reflected back to the surface is captured by receiver antenna. Amount of the wave energy that reflected beck to the surface relies on electrical properties of the surface materials and the GPR center frequency. Whereas the buried pipes have considerable contrast with the surrounding media, the GPR technique can be employed for detection of such targets. Pipes and cables typically appear as hyperbolic reflections on radar records. In same cases, it is hard to identify the hyperbolic due to the presence of noise. Thus existence of robust tools which helps interpreters and engineers to better understand the GPR data is absolutely necessary. Because of similarities between electromagnetic and seismic prospecting methods, seismic attributes can be used for the qualitative interpretation of GPR data. Seismic attributes are all information derived from geophysical data, either by direct measurements or by logical experience based reasoning. In this study, we investigate the effect of curvature attribute on the GPR data. Curvature is tow-dimensional characteristic of a curve and describe how bent a curve at a particular point at the curve, i.e. how much the curve deviates from a straight line at this point. The curvature attribute may have the same role as a filter in order to eliminate the horizontal layers as well as relativity high amount of noise such that this attribute is able to better illustrate the diffraction generated from buried pipes and cables. The result obtained using OpendTect and MATLAB conform the above claim.
