- Abstract
- Oil policies in the US have always been among the most controversial issues in all presidential campaigns and almost all candidates have this issue among their top priorities in their agendas. Normal citizens of the US are constantly faced with rises in oil and gas costs which are related to eruptions in the oil exporting countries. Therefore presidential candidates emphasize that they will reduce America’s dependence on oil through their policies. The first chapter of this dissertation tries to decode the US strategies in regards to oil through a game theory-qualitative risk assessment approach. This chapter provides different scenarios and works on the resulting strategies. The second chapter tries to point out the importance of oil as a strategic commodity to the United States and investigates the sources of oil worldwide and concludes that the Persian Gulf is the main stockholder in this market. The third chapter revolves around the problems the US faces in its relation with Persian Gulf. This chapter provides a historical overview of the US-Persian Gulf relation to give way to the next chapter which arrives at the contemporary US administration. The last chapter attempts to analyze the remarks and speeches made by President Obama in order to understand his policies toward the region, and see if they differ from his predecessor’s, once more generally applies the peak oil theory to US dependence on Persian Gulf oil and assesses the different resulting scenarios from these.
