Chronology of the University of Tehran

UT PR: The establishment of the University of Tehran in 1851 and ratified in 1934, represented a watershed in early 14th-century Iran (according to the Solar Hijri calendar). From the outset, the University of Tehran bore the title of “Iran’s largest Academic Institution”, and now, after about 170 years since its establishment, the University of Tehran still gleams like a gemstone aloft in the firmament of Iran’s scientific knowledge, holding such noble titles as the “First Modern University in Iran”, “Iranian University”, and the “Quintessence of Higher Education in Iran”.

170 Years with the Quintessence of Iran's Higher Education

Refreshing our collective memory would reveal the nonpareil role of the University of Tehran in the development and advancement of our beloved country, particularly in overcoming grave historical crises over the past century.

During this period, apart from fulfilling its mission of nurturing individuals, the University of Tehran has been the fructifying matrix and the starting point of such momentous historical changes as the Oil Nationalization Movement, the Islamic Revolutionary Movement and all the events leading up to the Islamic Revolution, and Construction and Science Crusade to reach the high summits of science, knowledge, and technology in recent years.

The fulfilment of this pivotal role in key historical events of the past century would undoubtedly not have been possible without convergence, collaboration, and synergy between the constituent parts of a network of science and knowledge repositories comprised of human, infrastructural, and technological resources. A survey of the University’s major historical events since its establishment, an examination of the lives and activities of key players in maintaining the leading position of the University of Tehran in the national scientific, research, and technological arenas, and a study of the contexts and factors making for the powerful and productive presence of the University of Tehran in the regional and international scientific, research, and technological arenas all serve to substantiate such a claim.

From a sociological point of view, there is a significant relationship between historical events and development. There are times when a concatenation of events leads to development. There are other times when moments of development become historic events. As a consequence, without a comprehensive picture of the university’s historical experience, it would be impossible to discern why and how the University of Tehran has achieved its current lofty position.

The foregoing calls to our attention the significance of a systematic focus on recording the chronology of each year’s events at the University of Tehran from the beginning of its establishment until now. Below you can find the chronology of the University of Tehran (March 2020 - March 2021) with particular attention to “Development News”, including notable events and occasions taken place at the University of Tehran (UT).
