Memorandum of Understanding Signed Between University of Tehran and Iraqi Delegation / University of Tehran Expresses Readiness to Establish a Science and Technology Park in Iraq

A memorandum of understanding for academic and educational cooperation between the University of Tehran and an Iraqi delegation was signed at the Office of the President of the University on Monday, October 20.

According to the University of Tehran Public Relations Office, in this meeting, Dr. Mohammad Hosein Omid, President of the University of Tehran, welcomed the Iraqi delegation and stated: “We have received numerous requests to establish branches of the University of Tehran in various parts of the country and in several other countries, including India, Georgia, and Armenia. However, we have canceled all such requests and have only prioritized the establishment of the Baghdad campus, due to the historical and cultural ties between the nations of Iran and Iraq.”

Dr. Omid emphasized: “In its reconstruction phase, Iraq needs trained human resources more than anything else. Currently, thousands of Iraqi youth are studying in Iran. Considering these factors, we decided to establish an international branch in Iraq to facilitate access to education for Iraqi students.”

Highlighting the University of Tehran’s top ranking among Iranian universities, Dr. Omid added: “Approximately 50,000 students and 2,500 faculty members are engaged in education and research at the University of Tehran, excluding medical sciences. Over 50% of our students are enrolled in graduate programs (Master’s and Ph.D.). We aim for the Baghdad campus to truly represent the international branch of the University of Tehran, producing some of Iraq’s finest graduates. Therefore, we are committed to offering programs aligned with Iraq’s needs, maintaining the quality and standards of the University of Tehran.”

The President of the University of Tehran noted that establishing such a high-quality center requires time and added: “The output of this center will be a significant achievement for Iraqi youth, the people, and the government of Iraq. We hope it will become a source of pride for the University of Tehran in the future. Our goal is not profit, but rather to ensure that, with the support and planning of investors, the best possible conditions are provided for this academic institution.”

Dr. Omid continued: “If we are unable to admit students this year, we will offer short-term Persian and English language courses, as this path is essential for the growth and maturity of the center and for familiarizing the Iraqi people and youth with it. In the near future, this campus will become a strong academic center with a significant number of students contributing to Iraq’s development.”

During the meeting, the Iraqi delegation expressed their satisfaction with the establishment of the University of Tehran’s branch in Baghdad and affirmed their full support for its development. They also provided insights into Iraq’s academic landscape and expressed readiness to expand cooperation, particularly in the field of science and technology parks and other academic and educational areas.

Additionally, Dr. Elham Aminzadeh, Vice President for International Affairs at the University of Tehran, presented a report on the latest developments regarding the University’s branch in Iraq. At the conclusion of the meeting, the memorandum of understanding for academic and educational cooperation was officially signed between the University of Tehran and the Iraqi delegation.
