A delegation comprising Indian investors and surgeons have visited the Iranian capital to be briefed on a domestically-made Cancer Diagnostic Probe (CDP) at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Hospital.
According to a Monday report by Fars news agency, the Iranian CDP has been designed and manufactured by Mohammad Abdolahad, a faculty member of the University of Tehran's College of Engineering.
The CDP is a medical device, which can determine the extent of metastasis and spread of a cancerous tumor in women’s breasts. It can detect the margin of the breast cancer and help remove cancerous outgrowths with high precision.
The cancer margin is the edge or border of the tissue removed in cancer surgery, where cancerous cells could still exist and lead to later recurrence of the disease.

The existing method uses frozen sections to detect margin of cancer and it takes about a full hour to do so. This interval increases the cost of surgery and reduces its speed, while causing patients to spend more time under anesthesia.
However, the Iranian CDP, which has been developed by Abdolahad’s research team, can reduce that time to 15 seconds. The sensitivity of this device has been reported at over 97 percent and it has been in use by Iranian surgeons for about two years.
Now, after visiting the Iranian CDP and its functionality, the Indian delegation has indicated its willingness to purchase the equipment and use it in 10 hospitals.
