Geography has been taught at the University of Tehran since establishment of University in 1934. Initially, it was a part of the Geography-History center at the Faculty of Literature and Humanities. With the expansion of geographic science, the Faculty of Geography became an independent faculty in 2002. Currently, it is the largest educational and scientific center in geographical studies in the country.

Currently, this faculty is offering a diverse range of subjects and majors (from BA to PhD levels) under the four major departments including:

  • Remote Sensing and GIS
  • Human Geography
  • Physical Geography
  • Political Geography

 Each Department is equipped with the associated staff, laboratories and work stations. An overall 56 dedicated academic members are teaching and supervising students under each subject covering various scientific topics.

Based on academic ranking of Institutes & Universities, Faculty of Geography enjoys a very good academic position internationally. This Faculty has earned the 150-200 world ranking in QS on 2018 (Best ranked among all of the Geography Faculties in the Middle East) and has More than 50 International students (PhD and MSc). This Faculty has been signed several MOU's with regional and international partners and also has planned to convene international courses, implementing joint regional and international projects, establishing joint Centers of excellence with international partners, exchanging staff and students with international universities. However, this faculty is running a dual master degree in English (RS/GIS) convened jointly by Lund University and the University of Tehran.
